GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Detention Officer I will take care of the needs of the inmates in the detention facility. The Detention Officer I records all activities of inmates. The employee in this position is responsible for recording all requests of inmates, medical problems, medications, etc. It is the responsibility of this employee to ensure that inmates are maintained in a humane manner and ensure that the inmates are granted their constitutional rights. Work also involves enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances as they pertain to correctional duties. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in crisis situations.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED or one to two years related experience and/or training.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under Dickinson County’s fleet insurance policy. If from out-of-state, must obtain a Kansas driver’s license within 90 days.
- Must successfully pass all required background checks.
- Must successfully pass all required psychological testing.
- Must successfully pass all required fitness for duty and drug screen testing.
- Must have the flexibility to adapt to new ideas and changing conditions.
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds, philosophies, and behavioral patterns.
EQUIPMENT USED
Vehicles, radios, issued weapons, uniform equipment, various types of computers and equipment, copiers, telephones, fax machines, calculators, breath analyzer equipment [Intoxilyzer, Preliminary Breath Tester (PBT), etc.], PepperBall gun, Taser, handcuffs, first-aid equipment, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), OC spray, in-car camera, body camera and other issued and available photo equipment; and any other special and traditional equipment issued to detention officers.
JOB DUTIES – RECEPTION AND BOOKING
Provide overall management of the booking and vehicle sally port areas. Handle telephone calls for the Detention Facility. Operate video equipment. Search/pat down incoming arrestees/inmates. Photograph inmates using photo imaging equipment. Supervise inmates housed in booking. Check inmates on a regular basis (at least every ½ hour). Fingerprint inmates and process arresting officer’s paperwork. Fill out Bond/Notice to Appear paperwork and enter Court dates in the computer. Record and store inmate’s property and money. Dispense inmate clothing, bedding and issued items to new inmates. Complete the book-out process for inmates. When released, return inmate’s personal property. Monitor inmates on suicide watch who are housed in booking and maintain a suicide log. Assist inmates with initial phone calls to bondsmen, employers or family members. Enter inmate’s appointments into the computer. Make incident reports for all unusual occurrences, rule violations, inmate moves, etc.
Provide housekeeping duties for the booking area. Testify in court when necessary. Perform other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
JOB DUTIES – HOUSING
Record all activities of inmates including phone calls and medical records. Prepare daily reports and enter reports into the computer. Conduct routine shakedowns, pat searches, and strip searches of inmates. Meets the public at the detention center and supervise visiting hours. Monitor medical status of prisoners, dispense medication, and notify physician of medical needs. Maintain the Detention facility (inside and outside), enforce all regulations of the detention facility. Move prisoners to court, for medical appointments, or to other facilities, complete reports and records. Testify in court on related activities. Maintain commissary and money handled from the prisoners. Receive and answer complaints and requests from the general public. Perform general duties in the protection of life and property as they pertain to detention duties. Maintain mechanical equipment in the detention facility. Check inmates on a regular basis (at least every ½ hour). Make incident reports for all unusual occurrences, rule violations, inmate moves, etc. Maintain cleanliness of various areas of the facility: Inmate Medical, Kitchen (equipment, pantry, floors, stove, etc.), Linens, Laundry, pods, cells and other areas of the facility. Assist in serving meals for inmates. Perform other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
JOB DUTIES – CONTROL ROOM
Monitor security for the entire facility. Ensure secure and timely movement of staff, inmates and all others within the facility. Monitor intra-facility intercom communications. Maintain cleanliness of entire Control Room area. Perform other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, inmates, coworkers and management. Must be able to render credible testimony in a Court of Law.

Ability to operate radios, fingerprinting equipment, video equipment, computers, and other related law enforcement equipment. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with others. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Able and willing to work with others toward achieving common goals. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of teamwork. Accept responsibility and complete work assignments on schedule, without undue delays and within other established parameters. Maintain acceptable attendance and arrives and leaves at the prescribed times. Dress and groom appropriately for the job. Keep work area neat and orderly.
